2011 Team Trials, hosted by the San Francisco Yacht Club, was a great and windy success! LISOT sent 23 sailors out to race in the Berkley Circle in the windiest Team Trial regatta since 2005 in Annapolis.
Congratulations to Russell Clarida (right), who qualified for the Worlds Team by finishing second overall with four impressive race wins. And for the sixth time in the past eight years LISOT will be represented on the World Team. Congratulations also to Audrey Giblin who was the 2nd girl overall (LISOT has had the #1 or #2 girl at Team Trials for the past seven years straight!).
The four-day practice before the event enabled our sailors’ to become familiar with the venue, and gave them a chance to sail around Alcatraz and underneath the Golden Gate. Experiences they will not soon forget! In the meantime, LISOT parents organized, watered, gassed, and fed the hungry crew. Awesome LISOT coaches Pepe Bettini, Pablo “Panic” Panichelli and Fernando Gwozdz led the group of talented sailors by day, and enjoyed competitive rounds of PlayStation soccer by night!
The entire SFYC team, PRO and USODA ran a top-notch event. It was clear from the Day 1 skippers’ meeting that the race committee and jury were serious about racing clean. The sailors’ were told succinctly that the on-the-water jury would be closely scrutinizing the sailors from start to finish. In turn, the yellow flags were flying throughout the event and had significant impact on sailors’ overall results.
The weather cooperated and even though the water was a chilly 48 degrees, the daytime temps were way above normal on land. Sailors had to dress accordingly, as the cove near the yacht club was a significant 20 degrees warmer than it was out on the racecourse. Twelve races were sailed, and after a “light air” – as the Californians referred to it – Day 1 of 12-14 knots, San Francisco Bay kicked up some wind and the remaining three days were sailed in steady 20 – 25 knot breeze, with gusts on Day 3 topping out at 30+ and 4-5 foot rolling swells.
Last, but not least, a big hand has to go to Megan and Mr. John Logue for tirelessly making sure that everything ran smoothly.
Congratulations to all of our sailors. Many of whom will have the chance to travel internationally this summer and represent LISOT on Team USA around the world. Also, in the next few days, the US National Team will be announced and no doubt there will be many LISOT sailors invited to join.
