Orange Bowl Regatta Gets Started With Light Wind

The Christmas holiday is always a highlight on the LISOT calendar because it brings an opportunity for some warm weather mini training camps and the annual Orange Bowl Regatta hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club.

The Orange Bowl Regatta is one of the few national events that host all youth classes at the same time. Optimists, Club 420's, International 420's Laser 4.7, Laser Radial and Laser Full rig are all sailing in the same event, This year is the 33rd running of the regatta. The regatta started today, December 27th, and runs through December 30th. There are more than 700 youth sailors participating and once again LISOT has one of the largest teams in attendance.

LISOT has 18 Optimist sailors, 36 420 sailors (between 9 C420's and 9 I420's) and 9 Laser Radials making a total of 63 sailors.

Winds were light today (Sunday) with the Optimists and Laser Radials only completing 1 race while the 420's completed 2.

Opti's Train at Shake-a-Leg Miami for Orange Bowl

Team LISOT optis had a terrific six day clinic prior to Orange Bowl.

Coaches Pepe and Fernando worked with about 10 sailors each day for the six days leading up to the regatta, including an afternoon practice on Christmas Day.

Conditions were perfect every day - with wind 12-15 each day - and a solid 20 knots on two of the days. Daytime temps were cool early in the week - in the mid-60s, but rose nicely as Christmas approached, topping out above 80 on Christmas day.

Teams from Switzerland and San Francisco joined for racing on a few afternoons, as well as two sailors from the UK on Christmas day.

LISOT extends a big thank you to Shake-a-Leg for hosting the team for the week - which gave the kids a place to launch and store their boats, and pre and post practice debriefs.

5th Annual LISOT Holiday Party a Big Success!

At what has become a LISOT tradition, about 150 parents, Opti, 420 and Radial sailors joined in the fun at this years' holiday party to celebrate a great 2009, and step-up 20 Opti sailors who have aged or sized out, and are moving into Radials and 420s.

Unlike last years' party, at which everyone had to contend with a heafty snow storm, this year the snow managed to stay a few miles North the day before - so only a few cars were covered in white when they arrived. And with such a mild fall so far, this year the Opti's had practice during the day, and came off the water as the sun set, just in time for the party.

The festivities were attended by Opti Head Coach Pepe Bettini, who joined live via iChat from Buenos Aires, and 420 Head Coach Steve Keen and Opti/Laser coach Jeff Bonanni who attended in-person.

LISOT President Doug Wefer kicked off the evening with introductions of the LISOT Board. Everyone was treated to a showing of Pepe's video of the 2009 summer season, follow by the annual step-up slide show - this year a fantastic DVD production by Jill and Daniel DelBello.

Graduates each received an engraved rigging knife.
