Fall Opti Season Kicks Off With a Lot of Smiles & Wind

The LISOT fall opti season kicked off this weekend with the first-ever opti practice over a Labor Day weekend. And what a weekend it was.

Nearly two dozen sailors who are new to LISOT came to practice at Larchmont YC to meet some of the 'veterans,' make new friends and see what LISOT is all about.

The weather couldn't have been better. Saturday was typical light air for early September, as 25 sailors spent the day with Head Coach Pepe Bettini, Amanda Clark and Annie Davidson. They raced together and worked on drills and technique in small groups.

Sunday was even better - one of the 10 best day of sailing this year. Under bright blue sunny skies and temps in the low 70s, the wind was blowing a steady 15-17 with gusts to 22, coupled with 4 foot rollers straight from the East. The perfect conditions for everyone to get some heavy air surfing practice. And for the few that ended up doing some swimming, the warm water was just fine.

After lunch, when the tide changed, the seas got bigger and the waves steeper. Just what Pepe was looking for to take the Advanced Group on a long sail practically across LI Sound and back.

Meantime, John Bainton worked with a very enthusiastic Development Group just off the Larchmont breakwater as they practiced heavy air gybing, and downwind surfing.

There were many tired smiles as the kids came in Sunday afternoon.

On to the Connecticut State Opti Champs next week at Milford YC.
